Getting You Started

If you are here you are perhaps looking to become a cyber security ninja and if you are like me, you like to have a game plan in place. Here I will be putting together a game plan for getting started in Cyber Security for new comers, containing all the resources needed to get you on your way.

NOTES:
*We are developing this as we go, so bare with us. Feel free to chime in with suggestions by email or in blog posts. Working on adding a site wide comment system.

Step 1: The Basics

No matter where you go in Information Security, the basics are the same. Check out the links below to develop your foundations in Security, Networking, and Operating Systems.

CompTIA Security+
The SEC+ is one of those certifications that is pretty much the industry standard for all entry level cyber security people. The material covers basics in networking, policies, frameworks, malware, encryption and more. Even without a degree, this can often get your resume through those filters and to the recruiter.

Study Material
Below are the books we used to successfully study and pass the exam. Using the affliate links help to support us here at The Cyber Union.

CompTIA Security+ Get Certified Get Ahead: SY0-501 Study Guide 4th Ed

You should be able to get through this book in at least a month. The author does a good job of writing in a style that doesn't immediately put you to sleep like some others. I recommend doing one chapter a day and making notes and index cards on acronyms and keywords you don't understand. Take your time to ensure you understand the concepts like how networking and encryption. These concepts in the book are foundational to any career in InfoSec.
*We will release followup blogs on some key areas to focus on.
Good video training to accompany the material can be found [here] at Cybrary. They do a pretty good job building out free content. While you are there, take a second to check out all their other awesome content. Additionally, many test preppers swear by Professor Messor and his content, which can be found [here]. Either choice should provide extra context to the information in the study guide.
After you have studied the material and gotten a firm grasp of the material, its time to understand how the test questions are asked. Test dumps are a great way to pass the exam, but let me stress that they will not help you get a job, only understanding the concepts will get you that job offer. Certifications are a funny animal and require the tester to understand what the exam is looking for. Be sure to use what is included with the book, but if you require more the following is helpful. PS I haven't taken this exam in about 4 years so these are all from recommendations.

Step 2: What is Your Perfect Job?

Explore the resources here to get an idea of what opportunities are out there for you. We believe that if you begin with the end in mine (Steven Covey said that), you will be able to structure your learning path better and shorten the time it takes to get that Ultimate Job.
